Everyone gets spots, no matter their gender, age or skin type. However, some people suffer from serious cases of acne, whereby they can have countless pimples all over their face.

The skin condition is most typically seen in teenagers, as this is when their hormones go all over the place, and acne is very much influenced by hormone fluctuations

This is because sebaceous glands near the surface of the skin, which produce an oil called sebum, are very sensitive to hormones.

People who have acne typically produce too much sebum, and this substance can combine with dead skin cells and plug hair follicles in the skin, resulting in whiteheads and blackheads.

Bacteria can also infect the follicles, leading to pustules.

Therefore, people tend to get acne during puberty, pregnancy or menopause, as this is when they are experiencing hormonal changes. Women can also get it worse during their periods or if they have polycystic ovaries.

Some people who have a higher level of testosterone are, therefore, more likely to have acne flare-ups.

Genetics is also a big factor, as you are likely to follow in your parents’ footsteps. This is because you could have similar skin types and hormone levels.

If you know you are prone to acne, it is worth avoiding oily lotions or creams, as this will clog up pores even more. If possible, also ditch tight collars, backpacks, and helmets, as these cause friction on the neck and hairline, which can result in the follicles blocking up faster.

If your skin has bothered you your whole life, consider having acne treatment in Brighton, which can reduce the signs of scarring.
