There is no bad time to get a deep cleansing facial. However, now may be a particularly good time because it will come at the end of a summer of contrasting conditions, and ahead of the challenges that autumn will bring.
While Brighton Beach won’t have been too clouded in July, as one wet weather front after another has swept in across the Atlantic and Britain has sat under an apparently immovable Jet Stream, it is easy to forget what a hot and sunny June we had, Britain’s hottest on record.
That means your face may have been hit by lots of warming sun – hopefully limited with good sunblock and a hat – before being battered by wind and rain, assuming you went outdoors much in July at all. Whether August will bring a return to warm and sunny conditions or four more weeks of grim clouds and rain is anybody’s guess.
Such varied but extreme weather means you could have had some pretty harsh conditions affecting your skin. Indeed, this may be even more so if you have managed to flee rainy Britain to visit the Mediterranean, where many more high temperature records have been broken. Even with high-factor sunblock, your skin will have had a lot to contend with.
In particular, dry and hot conditions of the sort that have prompted wildfires in the Greek islands also serve to dry out your skin. That is a good reason in itself to get a cleansing facial, as it helps moisturise your skin.
This is one of many benefits of such treatments. Others include cleaning out clogged pores and removing toxins and pollutants from your skin. Whether you have been subjected to the grimy air of busy cities over the past few months or even the smoky atmosphere of a holiday resort uncomfortably close to a wild fire, now is a good time to give your face a treat.
It’s not just about cleaning away the excesses of summer, however. While the second half of summer has felt somewhat autumnal, the real thing is now around the corner.
Many think of autumn as a wet season and while that is often true, it can be a very dry one for your face. That is because the defining feature from a skin perspective is the wind, which will blow moisture off your skin and can leave you feeling very dry.
For this reason, entering the season having just had a facial that leaves your skin in the best possible shape is a very good way to prepare for what it will soon endure. Thereafter, your skincare routine through the autumn should reflect the impact of colder air and drying winds.
This summer’s weather has been a microcosm of the very best and very worst that the British climate can throw at us and, with that climate now changing in unpredictable ways, it may be more extreme in the future. All that means your face will be more exposed to exceptional conditions than ever, so you must look after your skin well.
