What To Know About CO2 Laser Resurfacing For Mature Skin

CO2 laser resurfacing first developed as a medical treatment for removing cancerous sections of skin, but it’s now also a popular cosmetic skin treatment. It is particularly effective  for mature skin, and it can treat age spots and pigmentation, and also softens the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Here’s a look at what to expect from CO2 laser resurfacing at our Brighton clinic.

What is CO2 laser resurfacing?

CO2 laser resurfacing involves using highly focused beams of light to remove the upper layer of the skin. The purpose of this is to remove the old dead skin cells, and stimulate the growth of collagen to form new cells. This results in a smoother and more even toned layer of skin to replace the aged or damaged skin, thus the term ‘resurfacing.’

What skin issues can CO2 laser resurfacing address?

The treatment can address a number of common skin issues, particularly those that tend to become more noticeable in the 30s, 40s or 50s. These include:

  • Fine lines and deeper wrinkles
  • Sunspots and pigmentation
  • Acne scars or surgical scars
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Stretch marks

What happens during the treatment?

The treatment is carried out with a handheld laser wand that is passed slowly over the areas of skin being treated. It delivers pulses of laser light that penetrate the skin’s upper surface to a highly controlled depth, and are absorbed by the water in the skin cells. This effectively vapourises the old cells, and the heat simulates the growth of new collagen fibre.

Before the laser is applied, a patch test is performed to check for adverse reactions. If all is well, a numbing gel or cream will be applied to the skin to minimise any discomfort. The process will usually take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. Afterwards, an ice pack will be applied, usually followed by an antiseptic gel and dressing.

What is the aftercare process?

The full healing process can take at least two to three weeks. You’ll usually need to leave the dressing in place for at least 24 hours after the treatment, if one has been applied. Otherwise, you should follow the particular aftercare instructions that your practitioner has given you.

This may involve applying an ointment at regular intervals to keep the skin moist. It is normal for the skin to appear red and swollen, and you will feel a burning sensation like sunburn. The skin will naturally peel and crust as it heals, and you should not interfere with this process. After about five days, the peeling will gradually subside.

In the following days, fresh new skin will begin to emerge that will be noticeably smoother, plumper, and more evenly toned. Laser resurfacing is an intensive process, but if you follow the aftercare instructions well, the results will last for several years before a top up is required.
