What is the difference between IPL and laser?

There are many types of hair removal, from shaving to waxing as well as laser hair removal and even IPL (intense pulsed light). Whichever method of hair removal you choose, you should know the advantages and disadvantages.

For example, shaving is great for short-term hair removal and is usually easy, quick and entirely pain-free. However, this doesn’t fully remove the hair and you can be prone to razor burn as well as ingrown hairs with this method.

Waxing is a good choice for those wanting the effects to last longer and for a totally stubble-free result, however, waxing can be painful as well as time-consuming and it can be quite difficult to do without the help of a professional.

Laser and IPL are both light-based hair removal techniques that are often confused. They are in fact, completely different types of hair removal, however, both produce similar results.

Both laser and IPL should offer permanent results after multiple sessions and this type of hair removal is best for those wanting to get rid of hair entirely, whether this is facial or body hair.

It is advised that these treatments are done professionally, however, you are able to buy machines to use at home if you are comfortable and confident enough to do so.

Both these methods of hair removal target the hair follicle and aim to remove it entirely, preventing hair from reforming and growing in the targeted area.

Laser technology uses focused lasers in order to directly and concisely target the individual hair follicles and the melanin within the follicle. This type of hair removal works best on very dark hair and fair skin as it is able to target the melanin in the hair more easily.

The direct targeting of the laser ensures that the surrounding skin is not affected and only the root of the hair is destroyed.

IPL on the other hand uses a broad spectrum of light and is unfocussed, meaning it targets a large area at once and the skin surrounding the hair follicles is also targeted during treatment.

While this can make the treatment quicker, it also means that IPL may be less effective and is not as powerful as laser hair removal. This means you may need to undergo more sessions in order to see the same results as laser.

It can also cause damage to the surrounding skin such as hyperpigmentation and even scarring, both of which may require the need for additional treatments in order to reduce their appearance.

Over time, both of these treatments should produce long-lasting, permanent results. However, laser may be more effective and can often produce the desired results far more quickly due to the nature of the treatment.

Whichever treatment you decide to undergo, it is important that you properly care for your skin both before, during and after treatments to ensure minimal damage and to keep it as healthy as possible.
