Laser Hair Removal: What It Is And Why Winter Is A Good Time

Removing unwanted body hair is just another of life’s necessary chores for many of us. It is a never ending process, and constant waxing or shaving can take a toll on the skin. Imagine the convenience of having permanently hair-free arms, legs, underarms or bikini line. This could be the reality with a course of laser hair removal sessions at our Brighton clinic.

Here’s a look at how laser hair removal works, how you will benefit, and why now is a good time to begin the treatment.

What’s involved in laser hair removal?

The technique involves using concentrated laser light beams to target the hair follicles beneath the skin’s surface. As the pigment in the hair absorbs the energy from the laser, the follicle is permanently damaged, inhibiting future growth.

The treatment is only effective for hairs in the active stage of the growth cycle, so a course of six to eight sessions is recommended to achieve skin that is almost hair-free. Some people will find that the results are permanent, while others may need a top up session once or twice a year.

Laser treatments work best on darker hair

The treatment won’t be effective for people with blonde, grey or white hair, and some types of red hair, because the laser light targets melanin, the pigment that gives hair its colour, and these hair types don’t contain sufficient amounts of pigment.

The benefits of laser hair removal

Long term results

Laser treatment can result in the permanent removal of 90 per cent of unwanted hair. This frees you from the constant burden of shaving or waxing every few days. It also means that you will always feel confident whatever you are wearing, and you will never think twice about that spontaneous swim or gym session.

Saving you time and money

Removing hair at home or paying for salon waxes is a constant expense. After a course of laser hair removal sessions, many people are hair-free permanently, or just need the occasional top up, saving money in the long run.

Better skin condition

Waxing or shaving puts stress on the skin and increases the risk of ingrown hairs, which can lead to unsightly and inflamed lumps on the skin. Laser hair removal targets the follicle, greatly reducing the risk of ingrown hairs and leaving the surrounding area of skin untouched.

Why now is an ideal time to invest in laser hair removal

The winter may not be traditionally a time when you are prioritising silky smooth limbs, but in fact starting your treatments now can be a good idea. First of all, multiple sessions are required to get the best results, so by beginning your treatment now, you will have optimal results by the time the warmer weather arrives.

Furthermore, it’s best to avoid tanning, waxing or plucking for four weeks before the treatment. This is easier to do in the winter when we will generally be covering up. After the treatment, it’s best to avoid sun exposure, which is easy enough in the winter.
