IPL vs. Laser Hair Removal: Which One is Right for You?

If you are considering investing in a long-term solution for unwanted body hair, you are probably aware of two of the most popular options: IPL (intense pulsed light) and laser hair removal, both of which we offer at our Brighton clinic.

They each have unique benefits, and it’s important to understand the difference between them to ensure the best results for your skin and hair type, and what your goals are. Here’s the lowdown on each treatment to help you make the right decision.

How Intense Pulsed Light works

IPL works by directing concentrated beams of light at the hair follicle, which causes deliberate damage and stunts regrowth. The multiple wavelengths of light target the melanin in the roots of the hair follicles, which is the pigment that gives it colour

Therefore the results are most effective for people with hair colour that ranges from dark blonde to brown and black. IPL treatment is not effective for people with light blonde, red or grey hair, because the hair does not contain enough pigment.

It’s suitable for most skin tones except for very dark tones. In addition to preventing long-term hair regrowth, IPL treatment can also be used to even out skin tone, improving the appearance of redness and inflammation.

How laser hair removal works

Laser hair removal makes use of a single, concentrated wavelength of light to target the deepest roots of the hair follicles, for precise and effective results. This means that it works well for almost all hair and skin types, regardless of colour or tone.

Therefore it’s a good option if you are looking for a permanent removal solution for light coloured hair or if you have a dark skin tone.

Laser hair removal can also be more powerful than IPL, so it’s useful for stubborn areas of hair or very coarse hairs that have not responded to other hair removal methods. The results tend to be longer lasting, meaning that fewer top up sessions will be required.

Which treatment is best for you?

As we have seen, people with light blonde, grey, or red hair, or darker skin tones are advised to opt for laser hair removal rather than IPL. People with lighter skin and darker hair may prefer to opt for IPL, which can cover large areas more quickly and causes minimum discomfort. It has the added benefit of evening out skin tone and correcting pigmentation.

People with coarse, thick or stubborn hair, and those looking for a durable result within a shorter time frame may benefit from laser hair removal. Some people find the discomfort levels slightly higher, depending on their level of pain tolerance.

Whichever treatment you opt for, you’ll save yourself the time and trouble of constantly shaving, waxing or epilating, which can damage your skin and leave it looking rough and red.
