It’s the time of year when many of us will be preparing for a holiday in the sun before the fresh demands of September roll around. If you’ve recently had a laser treatment such as IPL hair removal or skin resurfacing and are planning to enjoy some summer outdoor time, it’s important to follow the aftercare instructions closely.
Laser treatments can give you beautiful smooth and radiant results, but it does mean that your skin will be more sensitive to UV light. This requires extra vigilance to keep it protected and ensure that it heals flawlessly, giving you the most long-lasting benefits from your treatment.
Here’s how to stay safe and maximise the results.
Avoid direct sun exposure
After a laser treatment, your skin is temporarily more vulnerable because the outer layer is healing. Direct UV exposure can cause pigmentation changes, irritation, or even slow down recovery. For at least two weeks post-treatment, try to avoid sunbathing or being in direct sunlight for extended periods.
If you need to be outside, aim for early morning or late afternoon when the sun’s rays are less intense. It’s best to schedule laser treatments at least three weeks before a holiday in a sunny climate so that you will have less risk of UV exposure, accidental or otherwise.
Wear a high-factor sunscreen every day
Even if you are staying in the UK, the sun is still strong enough to warrant the use of a high-factor sunscreen every day (particularly in sunny southern towns such as Brighton and Hove).
Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 50 that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and make it part of your daily skincare routine. Apply generously 20 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours, especially if you’re sweating or swimming. Mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are gentle and effective for post-laser skin.
Keep your skin cool and hydrated
Heat can increase redness and sensitivity, so avoid hot showers, saunas, or intense exercise for 48 hours after treatment. Focus on hydration – drink plenty of water and use a soothing, fragrance-free moisturiser to help your skin recover. Ingredients like aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides can speed up healing and keep your skin calm.
Avoid tanning beds
Tanning beds are a big no-no after laser treatments. They can significantly increase your risk of hyperpigmentation and damage your freshly treated skin. In fact, it’s best to skip them altogether, as they can accelerate skin ageing and increase the risk of skin cancer.
Wear protective clothing and accessories
Wide-brimmed hats, lightweight long-sleeved tops, and sunglasses can help shield your skin from harmful rays. If you’re heading to the beach or a sunny holiday, consider UPF-rated clothing for extra protection.
Stick to gentle skincare methods
Post-laser, avoid harsh scrubs, retinoids, or strong exfoliants until your clinician gives you the go-ahead. Your skin needs time to repair, so keep your routine simple: cleanse gently, hydrate generously, and protect from the sun.
