If your skin is prone to acne, you will know that it can be a source of great annoyance, particularly if you need to look your best for an important work or social event. Acne affects the majority of people in their teenage years, but some people, particularly women, find that it can persist well into adulthood.
There are many different approaches to treating acne, and it can be a process of trial and error to find out what works best for you. One acne treatment that you might not have considered is a chemical peel: it can sound rather drastic, particularly if your skin is scarred or inflamed. However, it’s a gentle yet effective treatment.
The chemical peels we use at our Brighton clinic are made with naturally derived ingredients, such as Glycolic Acid (derived from sugar cane,) Mandelic Acid (derived from almond milk) and Salicylic Acid (derived from willow tree bark). These ingredients have different properties and strengths, and the dosage can be adjusted to suit your skin type.
How can chemical peels help treat acne?
The chemical peel solution is applied to the face to exfoliate dead skin cells and encourage the growth of new ones. This helps to unclog pores and clear them of oil and dirt that can cause spots and blackheads to form.
Some formulas, for example peels that contain salicylic acid, have antibacterial properties, helping to kill the bacteria on the surface of the skin that can lead to breakouts. Other ingredients such as glycolic acid can help to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, which can help to even out a reddened complexion and smooth acne scars.
The chemical peels can also help to control excess oil production and calm down inflamed acne spots, which will improve the tone and texture of the skin, helping it to look clearer and brighter.
What to expect during and after a chemical peel
The peel is a non-invasive treatment, although you might experience a mild tingling sensation. For about three to five days afterwards, you will notice that your skin will continue to peel to some degree: this is normal and can be managed with your regular moisturiser. It’s important to avoid direct sun exposure or prolonged heat exposure during this period.
Once your skin has renewed itself, you will notice that your complexion looks smoother, brighter and clearer. The degree of difference will depend on the type and concentration of peel that you had. It may be necessary to have a course of four to six monthly treatments for the best results.
If you are considering this type of treatment, it’s important to have a consultation with a skincare practitioner beforehand to check if you are a suitable candidate. People with certain skin conditions, allergies, or who are pregnant or breastfeeding may be advised to delay or avoid the treatment.
