There are so many different skin rejuvenation treatments available these days, it can be difficult to know which one to pick. If you want something that will make you look younger and remove blemishes, you may consider having laser resurfacing done.

To find out about the procedure, read on.

What does laser resurfacing do?

This treatment is designed to reverse the signs of ageing and harsh environments, both of which have a big impact on our skin.

It can improve the skin’s appearance and elasticity, as well as treat minor flaws that you may be self-conscious about.

For instance, it can get rid of mild to moderate acne scars and age spots, as well as smooth fine lines and wrinkles. It can even rectify sun-damaged skin, and give a more even skin tone.

How does it work?

There are two types of laser resurfacing treatments – ablative and non-ablative. But what do these actually mean?

Here at Grand Aesthetics, we focus on ablative with our CO2 laser resurfacing. This works by removing the outer layer of skin through laser beams.

The wavelengths are targeted on one area at a time, removing the top surface while also heating the skin underneath. Thanks to the body’s natural healing process, this stimulates the growth of collagen as the skin regrows.

Subsequently, new, healthier tissue comes through in place of the damaged top layer, looking smoother and tighter.

CO2 lasers have been shown to be particularly effective, as they provide the best ratio between removing the tissue and heating it without evaporating.

Non-ablative laser resurfacing, on the other hand, works by using pulsed-dye laser, erbium or intense pulsed light therapy. These treatments also stimulate collagen, but are considered less aggressive, and therefore, less effective.

More about the procedure

Ablative laser resurfacing only takes between half an hour and two hours, which means it could potentially be fitted into an evening or lunchtime, making it a convenient choice.

However, this will depend on the size of the area being treated. The good news is you only need one treatment for ablative resurfacing to be effective, and you should notice a smoother complexion free from blemishes shortly afterwards.

How will you look and feel afterwards?

Recovery after the treatment will involve having a thick ointment applied to the skin. The treated area will also need to be wrapped with an airtight dressing to prevent it from being exposed to the elements.

It will feel quite raw as the top layer of skin has been removed, but the new skin will emerge within a couple of weeks. During this time, you can use painkillers and ice-packs to relieve any discomfort, which may include itchiness and swelling.

Don’t forget to avoid using cosmetics on the area until it is fully healed, and avoid risks of infections as much as possible. You should also use sun protection, as the skin will be very sensitive immediately following the procedure.

Once you have fully recovered though, you’ll find a noticeable difference to your skin. Looking smoother, clearer and more evenly toned is also bound to have a big impact on your confidence and self-esteem.
