Can Botox Injections Reduce Depression As Well As Wrinkles?

Botox is perhaps the most well-known anti-wrinkle treatment, temporarily paralysing facial muscles to reduce the appearance of fine lines.

However, some experts also believe it could be worth having Botox injections to relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression, as it could be linked with boosting mental health.

Psychologist Erika Wasserman, together with dermatologist Eric Finzi, published a study in 2006, which showed that two months after receiving their injections, nine out of ten of the participants no longer had feelings of depression.

What’s more, the tenth patient – all of whom claimed to have major depression before the treatment – admitted to having an “improvement in mood” after Botox.

Speaking to VICE, psychiatrist Michelle Magid revealed she did not initially believe Botox, or any cosmetic procedure, could have an impact on mental health.

“I was completely surprised when my study findings mirrored the original findings,” she admitted.

Some think this could be due to Botox preventing people from frowning. However, those who have received other cosmetic treatments have not reported the same improvement in their mood.

Additionally, those who have received Botox in other areas of their body have also claimed to feel less depressed afterwards.

Social psychologist Jeff Larson warned people should not use it as a “magic bullet”.

He advised them to still use talking therapies and antidepressants to help with their condition, but that more research needs to be done to confirm whether people should use Botox alongside these.

If you think a wrinkle-free forehead will make you feel, as well as look, better, don’t forget to book your next appointment for Botox in Brighton.
