What Happens During Your First Laser Hair Removal Consultation?

If you’re considering laser treatments for hair removal, the first consultation is where everything properly starts. It’s not just a quick chat; it’s a structured assessment designed to make sure the treatment is safe, effective, and tailored specifically to your skin and hair type.

A good consultation should leave you feeling informed, realistic about results, and confident about the process ahead.

Skin and hair assessment

The first thing your practitioner will do is assess your skin tone, hair colour, and hair density in the treatment area. This matters because laser works by targeting pigment in the hair follicle, so the contrast between hair and skin plays a key role in how effective the treatment will be.

You may be asked questions about how your hair grows, whether you’ve used waxing or shaving recently, and how your skin typically reacts to sun exposure or irritation. This helps the clinician choose the correct laser settings and approach for your individual needs.

Medical history and suitability check

A thorough consultation will also include a review of your medical history. This is important because certain medications, skin conditions, or hormonal factors can affect how your skin responds to laser treatment.

You’ll typically be asked about pregnancy, recent sun exposure, skincare products, and any history of pigmentation issues or scarring. This isn’t just formality; it’s about ensuring the treatment is both safe and effective for you.

Patch test for safety

In most reputable clinics, a patch test is carried out during or shortly after the consultation. This involves applying the laser to a small, discreet area of skin to check how your skin reacts.

The patch test helps identify any sensitivity, unexpected reactions, or need for adjustment in laser settings. You’ll usually be asked to wait 24 – 48 hours before proceeding with full treatment, ensuring your skin responds well.

Treatment plan and expectations

One of the most important parts of the consultation is setting realistic expectations. Laser hair removal is a gradual process, not an instant fix.

You’ll typically need a course of sessions spaced several weeks apart, as hair grows in cycles and the laser is most effective during the active growth phase.

Your practitioner will explain how many sessions you may need based on the area being treated, your hair type, and your goals. For example, areas like underarms and bikini tend to respond faster than finer facial hair.

You’ll also be advised on what results to expect, such as gradual thinning, slower regrowth, and reduced hair density over time, rather than complete removal after one or two sessions.

Pre and post-treatment advice

Before you leave your consultation, you’ll be given clear instructions on how to prepare for treatment. This usually includes avoiding sun exposure, not waxing or plucking (shaving is usually allowed), and keeping the skin free from active irritation.

You’ll also learn what to expect after treatment, such as mild redness or sensitivity, and how to care for your skin to maximise results and minimise side effects.

Building confidence before you start

A good consultation is as much about reassurance as it is about assessment. It’s your chance to ask questions, understand the technology being used, and feel confident that your treatment plan is right for your skin.

When done properly, it removes uncertainty and sets you up for safe, predictable, and long-term results.
