Laser Facials & Regular Facials: What’s the Difference?

Facials are a traditional way of refreshing the skin and also enjoying a relaxing pampering session. They leave us glowing and feeling good about ourselves, but we now have many more options than using a clay mask or steam. At our clinic in Hove, we offer several types of skin rejuvenation treatments, including laser facials such as IPL Photorejuvenation.

If you are unsure whether to book a traditional facial or a laser facial, here’s what to know to help you make the right choice.

Traditional facials for general skin health

The ancient Egyptians used mineral-rich clays from the river Nile to make skin-enhancing face masks, and this tradition has evolved over the centuries. Today, a traditional facial involves a series of steps, usually including cleansing, exfoliation, steam, extractions, massage, and a mask tailored to your skin type.

This form of facial is relaxing, hydrating, and ideal for maintaining general skin health. However, if you have particular issues that you want to address, such as pigmentation, fine lines, acne scars or signs of ageing, then you may benefit more from a laser facial.

Laser facials for addressing specific concerns

Laser facials such as intense pulsed light (IPL) Photorejuvenation use targeted light energy to penetrate deeper into the skin. The IPL is delivered at targeted wavelengths to address issues such as pigmentation (age spots, sunspots, freckles, and melasma) and redness from broken capillaries and rosacea.

It works by stimulating extra collagen production to trigger a deeper and more structured healing process. Laser facials are minimally invasive, although some people find that it causes a mild prickling or tingling sensation on the area that is being treated.

Some people notice a significant improvement after just one session, but on average clients will have three or four treatments for optimum results.

Both traditional and laser facials have their place in a good skincare routine. Whether you’re after a pampering boost or high-tech skin renewal, our team can help you find the right treatment plan tailored to your skin’s needs.

There is minimal downtime, although your skin may appear red and any hyperpigmentation may temporarily darken in the days after the treatment. It’s also important to avoid active sun exposure for a month before and after the treatment, so bear this in mind if you are planning a holiday.

Which One Is Right for You?

Which treatment you opt for depends on your skin goals. If you’re after a relaxing treatment to maintain your skin’s glow, a traditional facial is perfect. If you’re seeking visible results for concerns like ageing, pigmentation, or redness, laser facials offer a more targeted approach.

Of course, it’s not necessary to choose between one or the other: for example, you can have an advanced laser treatment every six to 12 months to address particular areas of concern, and treat yourself to a pampering session in between appointments.
