How Do Chemical Peels Work?

Chemical peels are a type of skin treatment that can help to improve the appearance of your skin, reduce scarring, fine lines and help to even the skin tone.

The solution is applied to the face and left to sit before being removed. There are three different kinds, or levels, of chemical peel which will suit different needs, whether they’re superficial, medium or deep.

Deep chemical peels may come with some risks, but the results are more long-lasting and this may only need to be done once to see results.

Superficial and medium peels are usually safe and don’t come with any risks as long as they are applied correctly and the skin is cared for. However, results may only be temporary and the treatment may need to be repeated to see lasting results.

A professional chemical peel works by using a solution which is applied to the face to treat the skin. This is able to seep into the skin and treat the area, often providing deep exfoliation. The top layer of your skin will usually peel off in the days following a chemical peel, revealing fresh, smooth skin underneath.

This makes them perfect for those wanting to treat surface issues such as scars, fine lines and even hyperpigmentation. The more intense the treatment, the deeper the peel will reach into the skin.

Superficial treatments will only reach the very top layers of skin and are perfect for those wanting to see results but who don’t necessarily have any deep-set imperfections they wish to treat.

For those with deeper issues such as extreme hyperpigmentation or deep scarring, a medium or deep treatment may be more fitting. However, it is always advised that you discuss the options with your practitioner beforehand to work out which is best for you.
