What Is Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is a common condition that causes patches and spots of skin to become darker in colour than that of the surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when the skin produces too much melanin, the brown pigment that gives skin its colour.

Types Of Hyperpigmentation
Before we can start your course of treatments, we’ll need to understand the type of hyperpigmentation you’re experiencing:

  • Melasma – Melasma is a skin pigmentation disorder that causes brown patches to appear primarily on the face. It’s thought to be caused by the hormonal changes during pregnancy, hormonal treatment, or while taking birth control pills. Sun exposure and certain skincare products can be potential triggers of melasma too.
  • Sunspots – Also known as liver spots or solar lentigines, sunspots are a result of excess sun exposure over time. They tend to appear on the hands and face, areas which are often exposed to the sun.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – This type of pigmentation is caused by injury or inflammation to the skin, often seen in patients with acne.
    Facial Pigmentation Causes
  • Melanin – The most common cause of hyperpigmentation is an excess production of melanin. It’s produced by skin cells called melanocytes, and several conditions or factors can change the production of melanin in your body.
  • Medication – Certain prescribed medications can cause hyperpigmentation. It’s also a side effect of some chemotherapy drugs.
  • Pregnancy – Pregnancy comes along with hormonal changes, affecting the production of melanin in some women.
  • Excessive Sun Exposure – Too much sun has never been good for anybody. Spending long periods of time in direct sunlight increases melanin production.

Melasma Treatment
Though there isn’t a cure for melasma, there are several treatments that can help improve the appearance of your skin. During your consultation at our skin pigmentation clinic, we’ll take a closer look at the affected areas and recommend a bespoke course of treatments to help you feel happy in your skin again. Laser treatment, chemical peels, and microneedling are just some of the skin pigmentation procedures we offer, along with a selection of skin lightening creams you can use at home in between appointments.

Chemical Peels for Pigmentation
Chemical peels can be a great way to treat pigmentation and uneven skin tone. We have professional strength chemical peels that are specifically designed to combat skin pigmentation. A chemical peel is a skin resurfacing procedure, where by a solution is applied to the surface of the skin to remove the top layers. This helps to bring the newer fresher skin to the surface, reducing pigmentation, evening out the skin tone and leaving the skin with an all round glow.

Laser Treatment For Pigmentation
Our laser treatment lightens and removes skin pigmentation by breaking down any excess melanin. Using short pulses of concentrated light, the laser wavelengths target the affected areas to create a fresher, even, and youthful complexion. This type of advanced skin rejuvenation is typically used to treat hyperpigmentation, age spots, melasma, and freckling.

Skin Care For Pigmentation
It’s important you continue to show your skin some love following your pigmentation treatment at Grand Aesthetics to get the best results. You’ll be prescribed a bespoke course of treatments and home skincare products to take with you, all of which will be explained in detail. Make sure you’re following the recommended routine between each of your appointments at our clinic to enhance the effects of your pigmentation treatment.
